China and the United States now account for over one-third of global economic output and over 50 percent of global growth. Bilateral trade volume has increased by over 250 times since the early days of diplomatic ties and takes up one-fifth of the global total. Two-way investment has jumped from almost zero to nearly 240 billion U.S. dollars, and annual two-way visits by the two peoples have reached 5 million.

"In the meantime, we should really work together to maintain stability of the region, and all of these sea lanes are extremely important for the Chinese economy. A large portion of our imports and exports have to go through these sea lanes," he said. "So we really have high stakes in the safety and security of navigation. The international community won't be fooled by the pirate-like bullyism under the guise of national security. Even the U.S. allies have protested against the brazen tricks.
"The attempt by the United States to create a 'New Cold War' trap and to form cliques to contain China will not succeed, nor will it be in anyone's interest," the Chinese Embassy stressed.
